Background

In the past decades, the use of computer, smartphone and 3D motion pictures among children in Hong Kong has become pervasive both for education and recreation. Children can experience same symptoms related to the use of new technology devices as by adults. The way children use the new technology devices may make them more susceptible than adults to the development of permanent vision problems including progressive myopia and astigmatism. Also, symptoms related to the use of new technology devices such as headaches and blurred vision can at the same time be the signs of some hidden vision problems of children including strabismus and color vision deficiency.

Therefore, in order to minimize the permanent vision effects of new technology vision syndromes on children, it is essential for Hong Kong optometrists to capture sufficient knowledge in new technology related vision syndromes and provide professional optometric advices to the parents and children in the use of new technology devices.

Funded by Professional Service Development Assistance Scheme, organized by Hong Kong Optometric Association and implemented by Hong Kong Productivity Council, the project will focus on the professional update of advanced optometric technologies on eye diseases detection and sight correction. The project will further enhance Hong Kong optometry industry's professionalism in providing world-class advanced eye care service and maintain our global reputation.
